WHAT IS THE MONTESSORI METHOD
The Montessori Method is a way of learning that supports the whole child, not just academically, but also physically, emotionally, socially, and morally.
At its core, it’s about giving children the freedom to explore and learn at their own pace, within clear and consistent boundaries. This means children can choose activities that interest them, while also learning responsibility, respect, and self-discipline. The classroom environment is very thoughtfully prepared, with materials and activities that match each child’s stage of development. This allows learning to happen in a natural, hands-on way, rather than being forced or rushed.
The key idea is that children are naturally motivated to learn. In Montessori, we trust that inner drive and create the right environment to support it, guiding children as they grow into confident, capable, and independent individuals.
Through her work with children around the world, Maria Montessori noticed that all children share certain natural traits, no matter their background. These qualities guide how they grow, learn, and interact with the world.

Montessori has been part of my life since the Oppenheimer family first brought it to South Africa. It
is not just something I have studied or a teaching method I have chosen—it is a lifelong passion!
Montessori has positively influenced the way my husband and I have raised our children and the
way in which we live our lives every day. Over the years, wherever life has taken us, I have found
myself opening a Montessori school. I cannot imagine doing anything else.
For me, Montessori is not just about education. It is a way of life that you choose every day. A set
of guiding principles that are the foundation of human development on which everything is built
from birth to adulthood – it is natural human development. It is about understanding a child’s
potential, respecting who they are, giving them time and space to grow, and trusting their
incredible inner drive to learn and become the person they are meant to be. We must protect their
right to be children during their formative years so this can thrive naturally. This lays the foundation
from which they will steer themselves for the rest of their lives.
It is my hope and dream that my work with children continues to inspire a love for learning, an awe
and respect for this amazing Earth, and an ever-growing desire to serve and lead those who share
our planet with us. I aspire to instil the qualities of a natural way of living into our youth, and to do
this, children must spend quality time both inside and outside of the classroom walls. We cannot
continue to educate our children traditionally when our future is calling for something different. It is
our time to act and support our youth in the best way possible for the future they are moving into.
The world our children are growing up in is changing quickly. We cannot keep doing things simply
because that is the way they have always been done. Our children will face challenges that we
cannot even imagine yet, and they will need much more than academic knowledge. They will need
confidence, independence, kindness, resilience, creativity, compassion, adaptability, and the
ability to think for themselves. These are the qualities that I believe come first in education at
Hilton Montessori.
I want our children to leave us with a love of learning, a respect for themselves and others, a deep
appreciation for this beautiful Earth, and the confidence to find their own place in the world. Most
of all, I want them to know that they have something special to offer.
